Food and Nutrition Security Review for achieving SDG 2

Armenia’s Food and Nutrition Security Strategic Review sets the path for achieving objectives under SDG 2

On January 15, the Government of Armenia launched the National Strategic Review report, laying the foundation for its policies and strategies to achieve SDG2.

Government officials, donor representatives, United Nations agencies, civil society and NGOs, attended the high-level public event where the main findings and recommendations of the National Strategic Review on food and nutrition security

The Review establishes a baseline that fosters joint understanding of the challenges and gaps in the national response to food and nutrition security, which could lead to joint agreement and consensus on priority actions required to achieve the objectives of the Government under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 by 2030.

“The agenda of the Government is the nationalization of sustainable development goals, including SDG 2 with the support of the international community” stated Mr. Vache Gabrielyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia. 

The early commitment – from the government, partners and donors – towards food and nutrition security demonstrates their shared ambition to provide tangible results in their efforts to achieve the objectives under the SDG 2.

“We are looking forward to continue working with WFP on current projects and extend our collaboration in other key areas of food and nutrition security such as support to small-holder farmers, data collection and management as well producers and consumers behaviour change initiatives and campaigns” – stated Mr. Armen Harutyunyan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia. 

A set of recommendations to achieve food security and improved nutrition, while promoting sustainable agriculture in Armenia by 2030 where presented by the NSR Lead Convener Dr. Armen Yeghiazaryan who is at the same time the Chairman of the National Centre for the Regulation of Legislation. The analysis and research work were conducted by a well-known national think tank, AVAG Solution and technical support from both the Government of Armenia and WFP. 

The recommendations of the review will support the government of Armenia in establishing a concrete roadmap for achieving its commitment under the SDG 2. It will also serve as the basis for re-positioning WFP in the country and the development of its new Country Strategic Plan which is expected to be submitted for approval by the Executive Board in November this year. 

WFP’s Country Strategic Plan will be aligned with the Strategic Review findings and recommendations and Government priorities, policies and strategies.
